Summary :

  • The Director of Health Justice Transformation is a unique opportunity to help establish and grow the newly formed Center for Health Justice, whose vision is to achieve health through racial, economic, and environmental justice for Black, Brown, and other people and neighborhoods harmed by structural inequities. The Center, which sits within the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation (CHTI) and has two focus areas – transformation of health systems operations (Health Justice Transformation) and rigorous research and community action (Urban Health Lab).

  • The Director position is a strategic and operational role responsible for leading the overall strategy, program management, budget and implementation for Health Justice Transformation. The Director is a member of the Center for Health Justice leadership team and oversees a portfolio of high-level strategic innovation and transformation initiatives from ideation, experimentation, implementation, to scale. The Director will lead a multi-disciplinary team to design and deliver initiatives as well as work collaboratively with CHTI staff and leadership across the Penn Medicine enterprise.

  • The ideal candidate (1) is passionate and knowledgeable about the health and wellbeing of Black, Brown, and other people and communities harmed by structural inequities, (2) has demonstrated experience and skill in leading organizational change efforts, particularly related to health justice (3) has experience leading effective and diverse teams, (4) can toggle effortlessly between strategic thinking and detailed implementation, and (5) has strong writing and communication skills.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a 3-year strategic plan for Health Justice Transformation, including year over year priorities and goals

  • Lead and shape a portfolio of initiatives aimed at infusing concepts of health justice into all aspects of Penn Medicine including transforming the experience of low-wage earners, leveraging Penn Medicine's economic footprint to help close the racial wealth gap, building operational structures to understand and intervene on racism in the health care workplace, and more.

  • Lead or oversee design and development of initiatives; identifying opportunities, defining projects and allocating resources, managing team activities, ensuring projects are aligned with priorities.

  • Establish and maintain strategic partnerships across the enterprise, working collaboratively across the organization to engage with senior administrative, clinical and operational leadership to identify high impact problems, shape and scope transformation initiatives

  • Build out and lead a cross functional and multi-disciplinary team that will help design and implement health system initiatives with rigorous evaluation

  • Manage the budget and other regulatory aspects for the Health Justice Transformation portfolio, in coordination with the Center for Health Justice Director

  • Build internal and external networks to increase communication and knowledge sharing and to engage in collaboration

  • Lead and collaborate on grant writing and dissemination through academic and lay-press outlets

  • Work with the Center for Health Justice leadership team to create and oversee an infrastructure within the Center which includes creating systems for documentation, operations, and communications for all aspects of the Center to ensure for efficiency and accountability

  • Work with Center for Health Justice Director to continue to integrate both UHL and HJT teams into the Center for Health Justice, as well as integrate the Center for Health Justice into the Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation.

  • Communicates/updates to leaders and staff regarding key projects, results, and opportunities

  • This position will report to the Associate Vice President of Health Justice/Executive Director of the Center for Health Justice (Dr. Eugenia South) and have a dotted line relationship with the Center for Health Justice Director (Nicole Thomas). The position will be part of the leadership team of the Center for Health Justice, along with the Associate Director of the Urban Health Lab, and the Associate Director of Health Justice Transformation (who will report to this position).

Responsibilities continued :

  • Strategic Planning:

  • Conduct exploratory analysis (i.e. contextual inquiry, interviews, and data analysis) in order to facilitate dialogue and help develop and prioritize strategic innovation goals.

  • Manage the intake mechanism for new strategic innovation opportunities that align with the department strategy; integrate priority initiatives within the annual strategic and operational plan.

  • Implement, monitor, and adapt the strategic innovation priorities.

  • Program Management:

  • Originate new ideas and monitor and evaluate future opportunities.

  • Manage project sourcing, intake, and selection of projects.

  • Lead core projects in the portfolio.

  • Facilitate the development, testing, scale, and sustainability of health justice efforts using best practices of innovation, design thinking, and change management.

  • Develop and maintain infrastructure to monitor and enable innovation goals, including key metrics, data sources, and dashboards.

  • Represent innovation and transformation as a contributing factor to the leadership team’s work and participate in the development and monitoring of related programs and budgets.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align and develop people, processes, technology, data, and incentives for well-integrated, systems transformation.

  • Capacity Building:

  • Lead initiatives to build skills, support best practices, develop a culture of transformation and innovation, and create a flexible, robust infrastructure to support transformation and innovation.

  • Provide thought leadership internally, advising teams at all stages of transformation and empower managers and clinicians to drive local transformation.

  • Thought Leadership:

  • Elevate the Center for Health Justice, the Center for Healthcare Transformation and Innovation, and the health system internally and externally as a national leader in health justice transformation publication, presentation, grants, and other channels for dissemination and thought leadership.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)

  • And 9+ Experience related to strategic innovation portfolio management (e.g., experience managing innovation projects from ideation to scale using design thinking methodologies; experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis, including financial modeling, to identify strategic priorities for large, complex organizations; experience working in an academic medical environment)

  • Master of Arts or Science (preferred)

  • And 5+ years experience related to strategic innovation portfolio management (e.g., experience managing innovation projects from ideation to scale using design thinking methodologies; experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis, including financial modeling, to identify strategic priorities for large, complex organizations; experience working in an academic medical environment)
