Summary:

  • The Perioperative Nursing Clinical Coordinator actively participates in a collaborative/consultative/supportive role with the Anesthesia Coordinator and members of the Perioperative Leadership team to assure efficient patient flow and quality patient care. Perioperative Nursing Clinical Coordinator also works collaboratively with auxiliary patient units and perioperative services personnel including OR Nurse Manager, Attending Surgeon staff, Central Processing Manager, Operating Room Materials Manager, and vendors to develop and manage all aspects of patient care, utilization of departmental personnel, fiscal responsibility, and material resources on the off shift. He/she facilitates patient flow and efficient/appropriate patient placements. Participates in Periop Safety check-ins on the unit. He/she supports use of the EPIC tool in communicating surgical procedure case classification, notification of impending transfers, EVS requests, bed requests, case assignments, hallmarks and other functions. He/she identifies, problem-solves, communicates and delegates to facilitate patient flow and EPIC system maintenance. He/she directs, supervises, evaluates, and supports patient care activities; serves as a resource to staff nurses and other department(s) personnel on clinical practice and is a resource for implementation/ interpretation of hospital and nursing policies and procedures. Responsible for daily rounding and overseeing completion checklists for the department. He/she promotes excellence in departmental programs/projects on the off-shifts and supports ongoing educational activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Judgment: Develops or assists in the development of and implementation of the policies and procedures required to support the requirements of all licensing or regulatory agencies. Coordinates or assists with the development and implementation of educational programs to support quality of care within the department or service line. Assists the Periop Leadership team with the implementation of effective and efficient departmental staffing strategies daily. Collaborates with multidisciplinary departments in immediate supervision of the staffing for all areas. Works collaboratively with the nurse manager/charge nurse to resolve any immediate assignment concerns with supplemental staff. Addresses staffing needs as it relates to case load fluctuation (i.e. scheduled, emergency and delayed/postponed cases). Supports excellence in patient care by planning for positive patient outcomes. Relieves staff for lunches or breaks and participates in clinical care based on unit needs. Acts as clinical expert. Delegate’s responsibility to others, in their absence. Provides direct oversight and supervision to the nursing staff and perioperative assistants. Mentors all perioperative staff in need of support in areas of critical thinking and clinical decision making. Provides real-time feedback to nursing and perioperative assistants to support individual and unit development. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

  • Communication: Maintains positive and effective interpersonal relations with all members of the perioperative team: including but not limited to all levels of physician surgical staff, ancillary departments, hospital administration and all ancillary departments. Is proactive in response to all queries, staff issues and clinical issue. Collaborates with peers to resolve issues efficiently and effectively. Mentors new, inexperienced, or other staff to assure positive and quality patient outcomes. Exhibits leadership qualities in problem solving, setting priorities and clinical excellence. Exemplifies in his/her action principles of collegiality and collaboration at all times. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

  • Quality/Performance Improvement: o Actively participates in departmental quality initiatives. o Provides leadership in assessment of departmental personnel as related to fulfillment of job expectations' Collaborates with the Nurse Manager and provides tangible feedback concerning staff performance's Supports the shared governance model. Insures efficient and effective operations through compliance with institutional and regulatory policies and procedures. All other duties as assigned by Nurse Manager.

  • Fiscal Management: Is aware of the financial needs of their clinical service line. Designs and implements actions to maintain fiscal responsibility of their clinical service line and the overall Operating Room operation. Is proactive to assure all required items (implants, supplies, and personnel) are in place prior to the scheduled operative case. Identifies scheduling conflicts and resolves proactively. In conjunction with OR materials management, reviews inventory levels required for quality patient care. In conjunction with the OR Nurse Manager, identifies and implements cost containment measures. Is proactive to maintain physician case preference cards. Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures. Other duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization

Credentials:

  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required)

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)

  • Cert RN Operating Room (Preferred)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science Nursing (Required)

  • 2+ years' Operating Room Experience (Required)
