Position Description :
Rhoads 6 is a 29 bed Oncology unit serving adult patients, 18 years and older. Patients admitted to this unit have hematologic malignancies including leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma; and solid tumors including breast cancer, melanoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer, and head and neck cancers. Patients are admitted for chemotherapy,
autologous stem cell transplants, pain control, neutropenic fevers, and medical complications of their cancer. Rhoads 6 often provides palliative care to patients when the goals of treatment have shifted. Rhoads 6 has 4 lead-lined rooms in which patients receiving radioactive implants are treated. In addition to the oncology patients, Rhoads 6 also occasionally cares for the overflow of medicine patients from other units. The nursing model employed is that of primary nursing. Primary nursing is particularly important on this unit because patients often have extended stays or frequently return for therapy and complications of that therapy. The Nurse: patient ratio is 1: 3-4.
The Unit Secretary is an integral member of the health care team who delivers quality care through collaboration and communication with team members. They work under the direct supervision of the nurse manager and the registered nurse to support the clerical and secretarial operations of the patient care unit.
Some of the major responsibilities will include managing clerical and information systems, receptionist duties, collection and reporting of patient data, incorporating organizational competencies of superior quality care and assuming responsibility and accountability for their role performance outcomes while supporting HUP’s Standards of Excellence.
Minimum Requirements :
HS Diploma or equivalent is required. Post high school education including computer courses and medical terminology, and familiarity with the computer/typewriter is preferred.
