Summary:

  • Under the direction and supervision of a registered pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician Coordinator organizes and provides leadership for the daily functions of the inpatient pharmacy technicians. Serves as the subject matter expert for the roles and duties of the pharmacy technicians and represents the perspective of the pharmacy technicians within the pharmacy department leadership team. Supports compliance with USP Chapters 795, 797, and 800 and assists in completing competency assessments and other quality assurance duties. Performs various functions associated with the dispensing, charging, and delivery of medication to patient care areas, in compliance with department policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. Daily tasks may include but are not limited to assisting in the preparing and filling of medication orders and medication carts, compounding sterile and non-sterile products, distributing medication to patients, performing nursing unit inspections, and maintaining medication stock levels in all areas of the hospital. The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator supports the recruitment, training, development and provides performance feedback for inpatient pharmacy technicians.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and triages daily activities of pharmacy technicians, performance of medication delivery systems and departmental workflows. Maintains knowledge of all technician workflows and covers each area when needed.

  • Participates and drives engagement of pharmacy technicians in continuous performance and quality improvement projects and department initiatives.

  • Supports the recruitment, on-boarding, and development of pharmacy technicians. Provides orientation, training and performance feedback for inpatient pharmacy technicians, in conjunction with pharmacy leadership.

  • Supports department efforts around safety, quality and regulatory compliance, including USP Chapters 795, 797, and 800 competency assessments and record keeping.

  • In conjunction with pharmacy leadership, create and manage the pharmacy technician schedule.

  • Leads regularly scheduled pharmacy technician meetings in conjunction with pharmacy leadership.

  • Prepares medications for dispensing while demonstrating accuracy, precision, and consistency relating to selection, packaging and labeling functions. Once checked by a registered pharmacist, delivers medications to all patient care areas in the hospital, including to automated dispensing cabinets.

  • Prepares and labels IV admixtures and other sterile products and performs necessary calculations under the direction of a registered pharmacist. Maintains competency in aseptic technique, sterile garbing, and cleaning techniques according to USP Chapter 797 and 800 standards.

  • Demonstrates skills in the maintenance and operation of various automation systems including, but not limited to, packaging, automated dispensing cabinets, carousels, and compounding equipment.

  • Maintains medication inventory, including rotating stock regularly and removing expired medications from stock per departmental policy; orders medications and supplies, as applicable; receives medications and restocks various pharmacy locations with new and returned inventory.

  • Maintains dispensing area and medication storeroom(s) in a neat, orderly, and clean condition.

  • Able to manage multiple priorities and adapts to complete all duties of assigned shifts.

  • Completes other duties as assigned to support the department, entity, and health-system.

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)

  • Completion of ASHP-accredited (or comparable) pharmacy technician training program.

  • 2+ years Hospital pharmacy practice.
